As part of a complete taxation system, the Jersey Taxes Office required a system for processing and collecting a VAT style tax known as a Goods and Services Tax (GST).
A system was required allow Jersey businesses to register for, and file GST returns. The system needed to allow paper-based returns to be filed, as well as receive digital returns electronically through a website. In keeping with financial systems, this system required a full range of security features, as well as auditing and management capabilities.
Giant created systems for the registering, assessing and collection of GST into the Tax Office’s existing systems.
Taxpayers registering for GST or making GST returns are able to send in paper-based returns which are then processed by Giant’s forms recognition system, or file returns online using Giant’s online tax returns system.
Giant produced a suite of OpenVMS applications to handle GST assessing and enhanced the internal database to store GST data. Workflow methodology was adopted for the process of validating GST returns. Reporting and auditing applications were also developed.
The Taxes Office required reports to be produced using SAP Crystal Reports and Adobe Accelio (Jetform) and these were also created by Giant.
