The Jersey Tax office required a complete system to scan in and read data from various completed tax return forms.

Giant delivered a multi-user client/server system with three modules designed to run across the organisation’s thin client Citrix based network employing a workflow methodology.

The first module allows an administrator to define a form type.  This specifies the location of each of fields on the form together with bar code which defines the form type and the taxpayers unique reference.  The second allows an operator to perform the scan.  The system automatically lifts the information from the document and interprets the data. The third module allows the user to verify the interpreted data to ensure integrity before finally storing it away in the organisation’s document management system (DMS).

The system is able to gather data from bar codes, check boxes, as well as printed text (OCR) and hand written text (ICR).  A3 sized tax returns are automatically rotated and collated to be stored as multipage image files for easy retrieval.

Unlike off the shelf packages, the solution could easily be integrated with the existing tax systems allowing tax returns to be automatically updated during processing.
